Woke up on the wrong side of the bed
So it really is possible!
In the past, people thought that anything on the left was bad or inferior. Proof of this can be found in our language. For instance, we still 'leave people on the left' or say we have two left hands. If you are a good assistant, you are someone's 'right hand' and certainly not their left. If, back in school, you had the audacity to write with your left hand, you would get a tap with the ruler. Right was the norm. It is not hard to guess which leg is meant when you get out of bed on the wrong side. The German version of the saying takes it even further: 'mit dem linken Bein zuerst aufgestogen sein' (to have risen first with the left leg). If you got out of bed with your left leg, you might as well get back into bed (though with your right leg first, of course). Your day was never going to turn out well anyway.
But did you know that you can really get out of bed on the wrong foot? And, and this is much more salient, that the wrong foot is not your left, but your right?
Hotel chain Premier Inn from England conducted research among 3,000 British adults and came to this surprising conclusion.
Those who occupy the left side of the double bed are happier and more positive than the sleeper on the right. More than a quarter of left-side sleepers consider themselves to have a positive outlook on life, compared to 18 percent of right-side sleepers. Left-side sleepers cope better with stress, heavy work pressure, and crisis situations, and furthermore, 31 percent of left-side sleepers say they love their job, compared to only 18 percent of right-side sleepers.
This might explain why half of left-side sleepers would under no circumstances give up their favourite sleeping spot to their partner. A quarter of Britons are convinced that there is a good and a bad side of the bed. More than 75 percent say they are so attached to their sleeping spot that they find it strange to lie on the other side of the bed.
A staggering 48 percent of Dutch people sometimes get out of bed on the wrong side in the morning. Women get out of bed on the wrong side more often than men. This is because women need more sleep. If they don't get it, the mental and physical consequences are even greater than for men. As a woman, do you want to convince your husband that you really need to sleep in this coming weekend? Just let him read this message. (And don't forget to thank Duke University in North Carolina for this research! ;-))
Still, there is a small upside worth mentioning for right-side sleepers. They probably earn more than their partner who sleeps on the other side of the bed. However, one might wonder whether money actually makes you happy in this case…
