How does screen light disrupt sleep?

You are not alone: the Morpheus Sleep Scan shows that more than one-third of participants need longer than half an hour to fall asleep. This can be due to several factors: think of worrying, difficulty settling down, being too hot or too cold… or prolonged exposure to blue light from smartphones or televisions. Why can screen light disrupt our sleep?
Our internal biological clock responds to light. At dusk or at night, in low light, our brains produce melatonin, the sleep hormone. This hormone regulates the wake-sleep cycle and signals to the body that it is time to go to sleep. Sunlight disrupts the production of this hormone. As a result, we do not get sleepy easily during the day.
However, bright light just before bedtime disrupts our biological clock. It causes us to sleep shorter and more restlessly. One of the sources of bright light is the blue screen light from smartphones, tablets, computers, or televisions. Scientific research shows that prolonged use of a smartphone before bedtime is not conducive to sleep.
Why specifically blue light has such an influence on our sleep
What about blue light and its influence on our sleep? White light consists of all visible colors, a rainbow spectrum from red to blue. Light propagates in waves; each color has its own wavelength. Red has a longer wavelength, blue a shorter one. The shorter the wavelength, the more energy and the deeper the light can penetrate our eyes. Blue light penetrates deeper into the eye and disrupts the production of melatonin there. The duration and distance of the light also have an effect: the longer we look at light in bed, the worse it is for our night's rest. The same applies to how close the light is to the eye. Using a smartphone is worse for a good night's sleep than watching television.
Give your eyes the necessary rest before going to sleep
How can these effects be counteracted? Avoid blue screen light as much as possible starting one hour before bedtime. Stop using your smartphone or tablet and instead find relaxation by reading a book or magazine. If you still wish to use a mobile device, tablet, or computer, there are apps that filter the blue light from the screen. These are available for iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows.
Other forms of light do contribute to a good night's sleep.
