A dream bedroom in 5 steps
The dreaming will come naturally after that!
The bedroom may well be the place in the house where you usually keep your eyes closed, but you unwind best in a tidy space that feels pleasant. Which is all easier said than done, of course. In practice, the bedroom is often a gathering place for laundry (clean and dirty), breadcrumbs (a legacy of that breakfast in bed on Sunday), and, with a bit of bad luck, a work task you wanted to quickly finish before going to sleep.
So how do you create that dream bedroom? Or at least: a space where you immediately unwind the moment you step through the door? Below you will find 5 tips to create tranquility in the bedroom. Dreaming will follow naturally!
1. Nightstands
There is one golden rule for nightstands: choose tables that are the same height as the mattress. Also, choose models that do not stick out too far, as this makes getting out of bed in the morning even more difficult than it already is. (And getting into it, for that matter.) Do you generally have a lot of clutter lying next to your bed? Then choose a cabinet with drawers instead of a table. Do you have limited space next to your bed? Then a shelf above the headboard can offer a solution.
2. Lighting
A bedroom really doesn't have to be completely symmetrical. That's why two different bedside lamps are perfectly acceptable! Pendant or wall lamps above each nightstand are also a great solution: they save a lot of space. Replace boring white power cord with fabric cord in a beautiful color, for example from StoerSnoer: http://www.stoersnoer.nl/ Finally, a dimmer provides soft, soothing light.
3. Accessories
Accessories not only complete the bedroom, they also make the space personal. You can, of course, go as overboard as you like (American designer Jonathan Adler always says 'Less is a bore'), but remember that you are in a space where you want to unwind. In any case, surround yourself with things that make you happy and that you enjoy looking at. That can be anything, as long as it contributes to a good night's sleep. Sweet dreams!

4. Curtains
Curtains sometimes seem to be the neglected stepchild of the bedroom. Yet they are not only essential for a good night's sleep, but also for the overall look of the bedroom. Depending on how light or dark you want your bedroom to be, you can choose a (blackout) roller blind with or without curtains. In any case, let the color of the curtains reappear in the rest of the room. This creates visual unity and tranquility.
5. Rugs, bedspread, and bedding
Nothing is nicer than a lovely warm rug at your feet when getting up. Do you, like most Dutch people, not have a ballroom of a bedroom? At least ensure that a third of the rug is visible if the rug cannot lie next to the bed in its entirety.
Bedspreads not only have decorative value, but they also provide an extra layer on a cold night. Choose a large bedspread that you can lay across the entire width of the bed. (Your partner will appreciate that too.) Here too, the rule applies: choose a bedspread in a color that is repeated in some way in the rest of the bedroom.
And then, of course, there is the bedding! Natural materials such as cotton, cotton satin, flannel (for a warm entry when it is cold), and linen are the most comfortable to sleep on. High-quality bedding can be quite an investment, but it does last a long time.
