The start of Morpheus

In 1948, Sebil Minco signed the lease at Vaartweg 24 B in Hilversum. It was a significant moment, because in 1941 Sebil – born into a Jewish family – was arrested by the Germans and sentenced to life imprisonment. He was forced to work in various concentration camps but managed to survive these horrors. After the war, he went to Switzerland to treat his tuberculosis. There he met his first wife. Together with her, he returned to the Netherlands and settled in Hilversum to live and work. The rear of the building on Vaartweg housed living quarters, while the front contained retail space. Herman Godschalk, Sebil's uncle, ensured that beds and mattresses were placed in the retail space for sale. On January 9 of that year, Morpheus opened its doors. Sebil Minco proved to be a skilled salesman and advertiser, and the shop premises soon became too small. In 1960, Morpheus moved to the neighbors at number 6 on Vaartweg. When Sebil became an alderman in Hilversum, his son Victor Minco took over. He was the one who expanded Morpheus to multiple locations. At that time, many people bought a bed for life, with mattresses made of kapok or straw. Victor developed a soft mattress that you could sink into comfortably in the right places. Morpheus welcomes fourth generation of the family business
